My message to all dance students out there...

I have had the privilege of working with some of the world's greatest Directors, Choreographers, Ballet Masters and danced with incredibly talented and gifted ballet colleagues from all over the world. I've been both inspired by and learnt so much from all these talented Artists. My career has been fascinating and extremely fulfilling. I now would like to give something back to my students. I would like to inspire them and share the passion for dance. Dance is so wonderful in so many ways. It is not only physically but emotionally and intellectually demanding. Dance is not just a physical activity but an art form. My students and all students , through dance, acquire flexibility, confidence, musicality, rhythmical and group skills which are important for everyday life. Dance can be life changing. With the right teaching and support children can blossom and grow both physically and mentally. Music is also vital in a child's education, it can be so stimulating and fulfilling to perform to a beautiful piece of music. I feel with my help, the right teaching and coaching children can also, appart from dance, go on to develop desirable attitudes; not only in moral matters but in all other areas. I am not just concentrating on teaching them dance but paying attention to their psychological needs as well which is so important for their development. It is so important as a teacher/ choreographer not only to set a good example but to lead the children in the right direction. Feedback from their surroundings is vital in making sure they really are learning, therefore applying moral codes appropriately. Good technique is very important for all dancers whether they be ballet or contempory dancers. I feel it is important to build the students strength in the lower body, particularly the legs and the core. Once this is established a dancer can express, tell a story with their upper body. A full-blooded dancer becomes a successful dancer who has both attributes. They will not become successful unless they have these. (Both technique and artistry skills, this has got to come from within as well). I feel it is best when classes are divided into yearly grades. I teach RAD and Vaganova technique plus contemporary. I believe yearly examinations (RAD) are important as they are an incentive for children to learn and grow both mentally and physically. Having this goal ahead of them each year, I feel, they will improve at a faster rate. For me to dance is to live. It is such a wonderful gift, every child should be given the opportunity to learn how to dance. Not only can it take one on an exciting journey in a career but there are valuable skills that can be learnt which are supportive not only in dance but all fields of life. The essence of dance is joy and it is a joy for me to pass on my knowledge and experience to my students.
